I keep my hens in a small Victorian back yard in central Newcastle. There are 10 rescued ex-battery hens living in a lilac Eglu Cube – Geordie girls are, despite what you may have heard, extremely stylish. The hen run takes up about 1/3 of the back yard and facilities for the Girls include a log climbing frame, shaded area under the bushes, dustbathing area and sunbathing corner. After a pretty miserable start to their lives, these pampered pets now enjoy experiencing the full range of normal hen behaviour, are re-growing feathers, and have me pretty well trained now to attend to their every need. They also lay some rather scrumptious eggs.
I hope the information on this site and the story of my own 'urban recyling units', or 'The Girls' as they prefer to be called, will inspire you to keep your own citychickens.
